Dazzling Doubles Day at Downswood LTC

To mark the end of a successful, but rather wet, summer season Downswood LTC held its autumn tournament Doubles Day last Saturday in glorious sunshine. It was not only the sun that dazzled as 22 members swung their racquets, pounded balls and dashed from court to court to claim the doubles titles.  The hotly contested finals resulted in Susie Blair and Liz Evenden just beating Emma Batchelor and Jane Chant in the ladies doubles, Martin Batchelor and Nick Kemble winning the tie-break to take the men’s doubles title over Richard Bailey and Steve Kershaw and Martin Batchelor made it a ‘double’ when he partnered Julie Rothwell to claim victory over Tim Snuggs and Elaine Ferguson. Refreshments were served during the afternoon and the finalists were toasted with a glass of wine.

A French Affair

On Saturday 6th September, Downswood went French with an afternoon of tennis played out in French costumes.  Members enjoyed French cheeses, patés and crudités in between matches, and in the evening 50 adults packed into our “French bistro” and were treated to a meal of coq au vin, various French desserts and wines.  The junior members did a fantastic job of serving the food whilst avoiding the heavy showers, but it did not dampen our spirits and we raised a fantastic £255 for the club.
